PRCC inducts members of Phi Theta Kappa international honor society at FCC

New members of the Beta Tau Gamma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa international honor society were inducted Monday, Nov. 3, at 91福利.

The chapter welcomed 12 students into the honor society. The induction ceremony was held at the Forrest County Campus with family members, friends, faculty, staff, and administration filling the audience.

Students inducted included Austin Aultman of Sumrall, Celena Gonzales of Bogalusa, La., Savannah Gygi of Hattiesburg, Desiree Loya of Hattiesburg, Kadence Martin of Petal, Kelsey McCray of Petal, Kaitlin McVay of Purvis, Julian Moreno of Hattiesburg, Maria Posadas-Vitervo of Hattiesburg, Akira Robinson of Hattiesburg, Veronica Sepulveda of Poplarville and Laurin Williams of Columbia. 

Phi Theta Kappa is known as the foremost honor society for two-year colleges with more than 1,300 chapters worldwide.

Madiha Karim of Purvis serves as president of the Beta Tau Gamma chapter. Other officers are Diego Sosa-Vazquez of Hattiesburg, Vice President and MS/LA Regional Officer; Savannah Gygi, Vice President of Fellowship; Kadence Martin, Vice President of Service; Wyatt Dow, Vice President of Scholarship; Frances Preston, Ambassador for Dual Enrollment; Julian Moreno, Vice President of Leadership; Austin Lucas-Aultman, Vice President of Service; Alexis Brown, Vice President of Scholarship; Olivia Collum, Vice President of Communications and Social Media; Laurin McClain, Vice President of Membership/Recruitment; Kierstin Polk, Vice President of Hallmark Writing; Maria Posadas-Vitervo, Vice President of Alumni.

Students selected for membership are considered academically successful having completed at least 12 credit hours of non-remedial courses with a minimum cumulative 3.4 GPA.   

Scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship are the four hallmarks of PTK. The current officers briefly shared how those hallmarks have played out for them as members of PTK. 

Dr. Jana Causey, Vice President of the Forrest County Campus, told students that PTK membership will open many doors for their futures.

鈥淭hese students are going to achieve great things while they are here at Pearl River and moving forward,鈥 said Dr. Causey. 鈥淲hat you are going to achieve would not be possible without the help of your teachers at PRCC. You have shown the ability to have pride in what you鈥檙e doing.鈥欌

Beta Tau Gammas advisors are Drs. David Collum, Terri Smith Ruckel, Ryan Ruckel and Doug Donohue, and Said Otwane.

Dr. Ryan Ruckel welcomed the crowd and Donohue recognized PRCC staff members selected by students who have made a difference in their education journey.

They included Cherie Alder, Jeremy Norris, Dr. Dan Childers, Heather Peerboom and Jeffrey Tinnon.

Dr. Ryan Ruckel also recognized past PTK alumni who were in attendance.
