PRCC honors students make impressive showing at Honors Conference

91福利 students made an impressive showing last week (Feb. 20) at the annual Mississippi Honors Conference, hosted by Belhaven University in Jackson.

Students from four-year and two-year honors programs across the state came together to present original research. Students researched various topics in science, math and the arts.

PRCC students Nolan Purvis and Julian Moreno of Hattiesburg won first-place awards; Olivia Collum of Hattiesburg, Diego Sosa of Hattiesburg, Seth Rhodus of Petal and Alexis Brown of Hattiesburg won second-place awards; and Purvis also won a third place as did Jennilyn Overstreet of Hattiesburg.

Winners are eligible to go on to regional or national competitions associated with the National Collegiate Honors Council.

鈥淪tudents earn invaluable experience and often go on to compete in regional and national competitions associated with the National Collegiate Honors Council,鈥 said Dr. Ryan Ruckel, Dean of PRCC鈥檚 William Lewis Honors Institute, Forrest County Campus.

鈥淭hey also grow in confidence and discover their path and passion in life while deepening their understanding of a subject and the academic rigor required to gain that understanding.鈥

Purvis won his first place in Creative Works presentation overall among two-year and four-year students and Moreno won first in Humanities poster.

Collum won second in STEM oral presentation. Other seconds: Sosa in Humanities poster, Rhodus in Stem poster and Brown in Social Science oral presentation.

Purvis won a third in Humanities poster and Overstreet a third in Social Science oral presentation.

Members of the Research Team get to work with an Honors Faculty Mentor. Faculty mentors included:

Dr. David Bunch (Jennilyn Overstreet), Dr. Jana Causey (Olivia Collum), Dr. Doug Donohue (Seth Rhodus), Ronn Hague (Nolan Purvis), Dr. Aaryn Purvis (Alexis Brown), Dr. Terri Ruckel (Nolan Purvis, Diego Sosa) and Dr. Ryan Ruckel (Diego Sosa, Julian Moreno).
