At 91¸£Àû, the legacy of the late Dub “Pawpawâ€ Herring continues to live on- not only through the family he loved, but through the countless lives he touched through faith, service, compassion, generosity, and a commitment to helping others become their best selves. For Dub, giving was never about recognition. It was a way of life.

A self-starting businessman, Christian role model, devoted family man, and servant leader, Dub believed deeply in giving back to his community and investing in others. Throughout his life, he quietly supported education, athletics, churches, families, and individuals who needed a helping hand. His generosity was often given without expectation of recognition, but its impact has continued long after the gift was made.
His connection to 91¸£Àû spans more than 40 years and now reaches multiple generations, with more than 8 of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren attending the institution, creating generations of the Herring family legacy at The River.
As PRCC focuses on legacy as this year’s academic theme, the Herring family offers a powerful example of what it means to leave a legacy worth living. His grandson, Andy Harper, played baseball at Pearl River; Andy’s wife, Candace Harper, attended PRCC and has served the institution for 20 years; and now their son, Parker, is attending Pearl River to play baseball.
The Herring legacy at PRCC extends well beyond attending classes or playing on a field. It is deeply rooted in a commitment to giving back. That commitment to the institution also runs through Dub’s wife, Donna Herring, whose decades of service with the PRCC Foundation helped foster a culture of giving that continues to provide scholarships and opportunities to hundreds of students each year.
Today, that legacy is honored in a new way. The Hancock County Alumni Chapter decided to award the first of 38 scholarships in memory of Dub Herring. Fittingly, the first scholarship goes to Dub’s great-grandson, Parker Harper, and his legacy continues as the Dub Herring Memorial Scholarship.
More than financial support, the scholarship represents a life well lived and a legacy that continues to make a difference. It represents a continuation of Dub’s lifelong commitment to helping others. It represents the belief that one act of generosity can open a door, change a life, and inspire someone else to give back. And, perhaps most meaningfully, it represents a legacy being passed from one generation to the next.
Donna Herring said, “Dub was a great supporter of education. He made many anonymous gifts to education and athletics. Thank you to Hancock County Alumni Chapter for your generous donation. The Herring Family appreciates your love and support as we learn to live without him. One of his favorite sayings: “Just do the right thing, and all will be well! Also, “The more I give to God, the more he gives to me.
Dub Herring’s life reminds us that a true legacy is not measured by what we leave behind, but by the people we inspire, the lives we touch, and the good that continues because we were here. Dub’s legacy continues through his family, through 91¸£Àû, through the students whose futures will be changed by scholarships given in his name, and through every person inspired to give a little more, serve a little more, and help someone else along the way.
