What Certified Patient Care Technicians (CPCT) Do?
Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals rely on patient care technicians to assist with the critical day-to-day care some patients require. They provide hands-on assistance to serve patients鈥 basic needs, which greatly impacts the lives of their patients and their families. As a patient care tech, you may be able to perform some or all of the following tasks:
眉听 Provide basic patient care 鈥 bathing, feeding, catheter care, etc.
眉听 Acquire, distribute, and administer patient care supplies
眉听 Perform safety checks and ensure cleanliness in patient rooms
眉听 Accommodate any additional patient needs
眉听 Obtain EKG readings and monitor vital signs
眉听 Perform phlebotomy procedures
眉听 Provide emotional support to patients and families, particularly when coping with grief and death
Why earn a patient care technician certification?
Healthcare is evolving, and patient care technicians are in higher demand than ever before. Patient care technicians are also facing increasing responsibilities in their roles due to a shortage of LPNs in hospitals and rising hospitalizations. Patient care technicians who are NHA certified (CPCT/A) are better prepared to tackle these responsibilities than CNAs or PCTs who are not certified.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of medical assistants is expected to grow 46% through 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations, which are expected to grow around 17%.
Having a nationally accredited certification, like the CPCT, can help you stand out. Certification may also be required or preferred for certain job opportunities in the profession. This class also provides participants with the opportunity to earn a nationally recognized certification, Certified Phlebotomy Technician. The two national certifications enhance training and make an individual more employable.
